Laser Vein Treatment Q & A
How do laser vein treatments work?
The advanced technology of the Cutera laser delivers pulses of light to the blood vessels beneath your skin, without harming your skin’s surface. The laser energy destroys and breaks apart the blood vessel tissue. As your body gradually reabsorbs the damaged tissue, your veins become less visible, and may eventually be eliminated entirely.
What kind of veins can be addressed with laser vein treatments?
The most common areas for laser vein treatment are the face and legs. However, the skilled team at the Center for Women’s Health uses the Cutera laser to address visible veins anywhere on your body.
The team treats several different types of vascular lesions, including:
- Spider veins
- Blue reticular veins
- Blood blisters
- Hemangiomas
- Port-wine stains
Laser vein treatments can be performed on all skin tones as well as suntanned skin. However, laser therapy is not useful for treating varicose veins that appear knotty and protruding.
Do laser vein treatments hurt?
You can expect to feel a mild stinging sensation as your provider uses the Cutera handpiece to deliver the laser energy to the veins below the surface of your skin. Most patients find this to be tolerable; however, if you have very sensitive skin, you can request that your provider apply a topical anesthetic gel before beginning your treatment.
Is there any downtime required for laser vein treatments?
Most patients can resume normal activities immediately following their laser vein treatment; however, your provider may recommend that you avoid vigorous exercise for the next 24 hours. If you had larger veins removed from your legs, you might need to wear support hose for a few days after your procedure.
You may experience some mild redness or bruising, but these side effects usually subside quickly. Removal of large veins may cause temporary pigment changes in the treated area. More severe side effects are possible but rare.
How many laser vein treatments do I need?
The number of treatments required depends on the size, amount, and color of the blood vessels to be removed. Following your consultation, your Center for Women’s Health expert will design a treatment plan to achieve optimal results.
